The Students We Miss

Why internalizing needs often go unidentified.

Not every student struggling is disruptive. Some students internalize everything — anxiety, depression, overwhelm, perfectionism, emotional shutdown — while appearing quiet, compliant, or high-functioning from the outside.

This film explores how behavioral health systems frequently prioritize visible distress while overlooking students whose needs are less observable. Through the concepts of visibility bias, referral patterns, and internalizing presentations, the film examines why many students go unsupported until needs escalate into crisis.
